Maar wat is de dood nu eigenlijk precies?

De artsen spreken over de dood van een mens wanneer er geen
meetbare activiteit meer in de hersenen is. De bijbel spreekt over de
dood als de geest het lichaam verlaat en terugkeert naar God die
Hem gaf. (zie prediker 12:5 t/m 7) Buiten de lichamelijke dood 
spreekt Gods Woord ook nog van een geheel ander soort dood: de
geestelijke dood. Dit is de dood die de mensen van God scheid. 
In vraag 3 kom ik hier nog op terug. Terug naar de dood als onze vijand.
Kunnen wij zelf die vijand niet verslaan? Sommige wetenschappers 
denken ooit van wel. Je kunt bijvoorbeeld al voor heel veel geld jou 
dode lichaam in laten vriezen en bewaren met de gedachte dat er ooit 
een dag komt dat de techniek zover is dat ze jou lichaam weer levend 
kunnen maken. En wat zouden wij er niet voor over hebben om een
pilletje te slikken zodat wij onstervelijk zijn? Ach ja, de dood, konden 
wij die maar tegenhouden. Is er dan helemaal niets tegen te doen?

Tegen de lichamelijke dood is helaas of misschien wel gelukkig niets
tegen te doen! Jou lichaam sterft 100% zeker aan of een ernstige 
ziekte, een ongeval, moord, ouderdom of een plotselinge uitval van 
één van de belangrijke organen zoals het hart. Ja ook jij kan slechts 
één hartslag verwijdert zijn van de dood. Nu spreken velen godsdiensten 
en gedachten van mensen uit dat het met de dood niet afgelopen is. 
Er is veel meer tussen hemel en aarde zeggen we wel eens, en dit is
ook zo. Met de dood is niet alles afgelopen. Jezus Christus zegt in 
Johannes 11:25: "Ik ben de opstanding en het leven, wie in Mij gelooft
zal leven, ook al is Hij gestorven." Hoopvolle woorden hé? Je vind deze
text ook wel eens terug op iemands grafsteen. Toch is en blijft de dood
moeilijk voor iemand te accepteren. Op de één of andere manier weten
wij diep van binnen dat de dood eigenlijk niet bij ons hoort. Hoe komt 
dat en waarom gaan wij eigenlijk allemaal dood?

Waarom gaan wij dood?   

Het menselijke lichaam bestaat uit miljarden cellen met velen functies.
Elke cel kunnen we beschouwen als een compleet opzichzelf werkende 
levend fabriekje. Er is een uiterst gecompliseerde samenwerking 
tussen al die miljarden fabriekjes. Neem nu bijvoorbeeld de hersenen,
een wonderlijke organische super computer waar de wetenschap nog
maar weinig van af weet. Ook een groot mysterie is het verouderingsproces 
van de mens, want hoe komt het nou dat al die miljarden cellen veranderen 
naar mate ze ouder worden? Wie of wat zet dit verouderingsproces van de
mens in werking? En wanneer de dood intreed stoppen al die miljarden 
opzichzelf werkende fabriekjes ineens allemaal tegelijk met werken.
Hoe kan dat? Waarom gaan we uiteindelijk allemaal dood?

In Genesis 2:16 daar staat: God waarschuwde de mens: "Je mag van
alle bomen in de hof eten, maar niet van de boom van de kennis van
goed en kwaad. Want als je daarvan eet, zul je zeker sterven." en in
Romeinen 5:12 daar staat: Door de schuld van één mens, Adam is 
de zonde in de wereld gekomen en de dood is het logische gevolg 
van de zonde. De dood breidde zich uit naar alle mensen, want zij 
zondigden allemaal. Je zou het ook zo kunnen zeggen: toen de eerste 
mensen Adam en Eva, die de dood nog niet kenden, God ongehoorzaam
werden kon God niet anders dan Zijn Woord nakomen en zo werdt de
mens ineens sterfelijk. Hierdoor kwam de gehele aarde onder de 
vloek van de dood terecht waardoor er ziekte, pijn, ouderdom en tenslotte
de dood voor alles wat leeft ononkoombaar werden. In Romeinen 8:10a
daar staat het nog eens: Door de zonde is uw lichaam onderworpen aan 
de dood. Dit is het antwoord, maar er is nog iets.

Niet alleen sterven wij lichamelijk, ook geestelijk zijn wij gestorven
door de zonden. Dit betekent dat het contact met God, jou schepper
ook nog is verbroken. De dood brengt uiteindelijk alleen maar 
scheiding. Lichamelijk van onze geliefden op deze aarde en geestelijk 
heeft de dood ons van God gescheiden! Dit is een zeer hopeloze
boodschap voor de mens. Gelukkig hoeft het zo niet te blijven, want 
God zelf heeft het contact met de mens weer herstelt door Zijn Zoon 
Jezus Christus in onze plaats aan het kruis te laten sterven. Ieder
mens die nu Jezus aanroept zal verlost worden van zijn geestelijke 
dood en zo weer levend worden voor God. In Romeinen 6:23 daar
staat het zo: De zonde betaald een hard loon: De dood! Maar de
genade van God geeft wat niemand verdient: Eeuwig leven met
Christus Jezus, onze Here. God wil niets liever dan dat ook jij Zijn 
Zoon Jezus aanvaard zodat Hij, als jou lichaam straks sterft ook jou
kan verwelkomen in die eeuwige prachtige hemel bij Hem. Maar ja,
is er eigenlijk wel een eeuwige prachtige hemel?

Is er een hemel?

Om op deze vraag duidelijkheid te scheppen moeten wij verschillende
bronnen raadplegen. Allereerst is daar jou innerlijke verlangen en 
geweten. God heeft iets diep in jou hart gelegd dat zegt: "Met de
dood is niet alles afgelopen; Er moet iets zijn na de dood." Dit verklaard 
ook dat alle mensen van de hele wereld zoekende zijn naar iets spiritueels
, iets hogers wat hen leven na de dood in de hemel kan geven. Ten 
diepste weet de mens dat er een hemel moet zijn. Wij zijn zoekende alsof 
wij de hemel zijn kwijtgeraakt en dat is ook zo sinds de zondeval van de
eerste mens. Als God dit verlangen niet in het hart van de mens zou
hebben gelegd dan zouden de mensen allemaal tevreden zijn met dit 
aardse leven, de dood accepteren als einde van hun leven en ophouden
met spiritualiteit en zoeken naar de hemel of een eeuwig leven.

Ten tweede zijn er de duizenden getuigenissen van mensen met een
bijna dood ervaring. Velen hebben over de grens van de dood mogen
kijken en iets opgevangen van een prachtige hemel in het hiernamaals.
Iemand die dit persoonlijk heeft meegemaakt is er voor de volle

Als laatste bron die het bestaan van de hemel aantoont slaan we de
bijbel open op verschillende plaatsen: Johannes 14:6: daar zegt Jezus:
"Ik ben de weg, de waarheid en het leven, Ik ben de enige weg naar
de hemel." En in Lukas 23:43 daar antwoordde de gekruisigde 
Jezus tegen die ene berouwvolle moordenaar naast Hem aan het kruis:
"Vandaag zult u met Mij in de hemel zijn. Daar kunt u zeker van zijn.
" In Mattheus 7:21 spreekt Jezus deze woorden: "Niet alle mensen 
die 'Here' tegen Mij zeggen, komen in de hemel. Want daar komt u 
alleen als u doet wat mijn hemelse Vader wil." En tenslotte in 
Johannes 14:2 daar zegt Jezus: "In het huis van mijn Vader 
(in de hemel) zijn vele woningen. Ik ga daar straks heen om uw plaats
te bereiden." Tot zover een aantal bijbeltexten. Tot nu toe hebben 
we alleen nog maar gelezen over het bestaan van een eeuwige hemel 
en die is er, maar bestaat er eigenlijk ook een eeuwige verschrikkelijke hel?

Er zijn velen mensen die niet in het bestaan van de hel geloven. 
Ze geloven dat uiteindelijk alle mensen na hun dood in de hemel
zullen komen. Want hoe kan een God van liefde nu iemand naar de
hel sturen? Ook zijn er velen mensen die geloven dat de hel slechts
tijdelijk of symbolisch is. Wat is nu waar? Kunnen we de hel weg
halen door te geloven dat hij niet bestaat? Er zijn 4 visies over het 
wel of niet bestaan van de hel. Slechts één visie kan de waarheid zijn.
Laten we ze eens bekijken. Visie 1: Er bestaat geen hel - de ongelovige
mens wordt na zijn dood vernietigd en houd op te bestaan. Deze visie
wordt geleerd door oa Jehova's Getuigen. Visie 2: Er bestaat geen
hel - of je nu gelovig of ongelovig bent, iedereen komt uiteindelijk 
in de hemel want Jezus stierf toch voor iedereen? Dit is de steeds
populair wordende alverzoeningsleer. Ook de New Age denkers
geloven uiteindelijk alleen maar in een vredige paradijselijke nieuwe
wereld zonder hel!

Visie 3: De hel bestaat wel - maar het is slechts een tijdelijke
plaats. Na je dood moet je nog een poosje in de hel verblijven om
te louteren. Als je op aarde niet goed genoeg hebt geleefd betaal
je door tijdelijk in de hel te branden jou schuld af. Daarna kan je
de hemel binnengaan. Visie 4: De hel bestaat wel - en het is een 
difinitieve pijnlijke plaats voor altijd en eeuwig. Iedereen die 
Jezus Christus de gekruisigde en opgestane Heer in zijn of haar 
leven afwijst komt in de hel! Deze laatste visie is de minst populaire
visie omdat het ook de meest verschrikkelijke van de 4 is. Toch 
zullen we aan de hand van een aantal bijbeltexten aantonen dat visie
4 de enige ware visie is. Hou bij het lezen van de bijbeltexten 
hieronder deze text in het achterhoofd: Psalm 119:160: Heel Uw 
Woord is de waarheid!

Mattheus 10:28: Wees niet bang voor hen die wel je lichaam kunnen
doden, maar niet je ziel. Wees alleen bang voor God die zowel je ziel 
als je lichaam kan verderven in de hel. Psalmen 9:18: De Goddelozen
zullen in de hel terecht komen, al de mensen die God vergeten. 
Openbaring 20:15: Als iemands naam niet in het levensboek stond, werd 
hij in de poel van vuur gegooid. Dan volgen er nu enkele texten die
aantonen dat de hel voor altijd en eeuwig is: Openbaring 20:10b: 
Daar zullen zij dag en nacht gepijnigd worden, voor altijd en eeuwig. 
Markus 9:43: Je kunt beter met één hand het eeuwige leven binnengaan,
dan met twee handen in de hel terechtkomen, in het vuur dat nooit
uitgaat. Openbaringen 14:11: De rook van dit folterende vuur stijgt
op tot in alle eeuwigheden. De mensen die in de hel zijn zullen geen
moment rust meer hebben. Tot zover. Ook wordt de hel in negatieve
bijna dood ervaringen gezien. Maar wat zijn nu eigenlijk bijna dood 
ervaringen (bde's) en zijn ze wetenschappelijk bewezen?

Wat zijn bde's?

In 1975 kwam Dr. Raymond Moody met zijn onderzoek over bijna
dood ervaringen. (BDE's) Hij onderzocht mensen die klinisch dood 
waren en alsnog tot leven werden gebracht. Een aantal van deze
mensen kwamen met verhalen over hun belevenissen op het moment
dat ze eigenlijk overleden waren. Deze belevenissen bevatten zoveel 
gelijksoortige kenmerken dat er geen sprake kon zijn van toevalligheden
of fantasie. Ook in Nederland is wetenschappelijk onderzoek gedaan 
door cardioloog W. van Lommel. Volgens van Lommel staat de bijna 
dood ervaring wetenschappelijk vast. De arts heeft bewezen dat het
menselijk bewustzijn geen product van de hersenen is. De hersenen
zijn het ontvangstapparaat van het zelfstandige bewustzijn. Het is te 
vergelijken met een tv: er is altijd een uitzending, maar dat zie je
alleen als je inschakelt. Zo is het bewustzijn er blijkbaar ook altijd.
Een BDE wordt dus niet veroorzaakt door afstervende hersencellen
want als we klinisch dood zijn is er geen hersenactiviteit meer en toch 
beleven we een bijna dood ervaring. Wat ziet en ervaart men in een
bijna dood ervaring?

Het begin van een BDE is dat de ziel het stervende lichaam verlaat.
Men ziet dan vanaf bovenaf het eigen lichaam. Ook de artsen of 
andere personen om het lichaam worden waargenomen. De uitgetreden
mens voelt zijn lichaam niet meer en voelt zich niet meer beperkt door
ruimte en tijd. Velen ervaren een gevoel van rust, vredigheid, liefde
en het besef dat men dood is. Met een enorme snelheid reist men 
vervolgens door de kosmos waarbij sterren en hemellichamen razendsnel 
voorbij schieten. Door de grote snelheid vormt zich een soort tunnel
waardoor men reist. Het licht aan het einde van de tunnel wordt omschreven
als vredig, heel mooi en hemels, goud en rozekleurig. Vaak ziet men een
hemels landschap of ook wel een goudkleurige stad met allemaal wezens
in gewaden. Maar niet altijd is een BDE mooi en vredig. Sommigen komen
op een verschrikkelijke plaats terecht waar veel hitte is, gekreun van
personen, onderdrukking heerst, en waar angst en pijn worden ervaren.
